Tips to Maximize Your Personal Storage Space

General Tips
  • Use up all of the available space in your unit.
  • Put pallets on concrete storage floors to protect your belongings from dampness
  • Put frequently-used items closer to the entrance
  • Put heavier items in smaller boxes for easier lifting
  • Label your boxes and seal them with tape.
  • Seal fragile items in with packing material and put them at the top of your storage for protection
  • Store bedding, clothes, curtains and the like on no-rust hangers. Protect wool items from moths with cedar chips.
Furniture
  • Wax wooden furniture to prevent moisture damage
  • Consider using climate-controlled storage units (We have them available!)
  • Tie disassembled bed frames together and tape the nuts, bolts, etc to them in zip-lock bags
  • Put blankets in between stacked furniture and don't forget that moisture can condense under plastic covers! Use cloth instead!
  • Cover mattresses in mattress bags or cloth for protection. Avoid leaning them against walls, as moisture can condense on walls.
    Dishes/Glassware/Silverware
  • Wrap every glass item individually and place near the top of storage.
  • Don't put heavy items on boxes containing glass.
Appliances
  • A fridge or freezer should be stored after it is completely dry. Store with the door opened slightly.
Metal Items
  • Wipe all metal items (like bikes) with a few drops of machine oil to slow the rusting process.
Paper/Books/Documents
  • Protect book spines by packing books flat. Put boxes containing paper items on pallets to prevent moisture absorption.

Pictures, Mirrors and Other Frames
  • Wrap pictures that are small and stand them on end in boxes.
  • By picture-moving boxes for larger items

Food and Natural Treats
  • Don't store frozen items that might break in non-climate-controlled units.
  • Don't store food in plastic or in boxes as rodents could tear into them.
Prohibited Stored Goods
Never store, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids and fuels, toxic materials, or other items that need a controlled environment.
